Surface processes such as erosion, sediment transport, and deposition have sculpted the face of the Earth for billions of years. Sediments and landforms are extremely valuable archives to understanding the past, present, and future of our planet.
We are part of the Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographic Sciences at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus. We promote a novel integration between geomorphology and sedimentology, environmental sciences, geomatics, and geophysical modeling. Our favorite field sites are in the Canadian Arctic and Cordillera, and the Great Basin of western USA. There, we conduct core research in the fields of Earth and planetary geomorphology, basin analysis, and fluvial biogeochemistry. Student applications to join our lab are welcomed year-round. |

Who we are
Alessandro Ielpi, Ph. D.
Assistant Professor, Geomorphology [email protected] Alessandro holds a Ph. D. from the University of Siena (2013). Prior to his appointment at the University of British Columbia-Okanagan, Alessandro was an NSERC research fellow from 2014 to 2015, and a faculty member at Laurentian University from 2016 to 2022. |
Jade Lockie, B. Sc. Hons., Ph. D. candidate
[email protected] Jade holds a B. Sc. Hons. from Laurentian University. Jade's Ph. D. project deals with the detrital zircon record of post-collisional collapse in ancient and modern orogens. |
Riccardo Maitan, visiting Ph. D. candidate
[email protected] Riccardo is visiting our group and is currently working towards a PhD project at the University of Padua about the morphodynamic controls of peak-discharge variability in meandering rivers |
Gareth Wells, B. Sc., M. Sc. candidate
[email protected] Gareth holds a B. Sc. from the University of the Fraser Valley. Gareth's M. Sc. project deals with the response to wildfires in the Deadman River watershed, British Columbia, Canada. |
Andrea Demers, B. Sc. Hons. candidate
[email protected] Andrea's B. Sc. Hons. project deals with modelling sediment and carbon fluxes in the permafrost floodplain of Engineer Creek, Yukon, Canada. |
Maddie Norman, B. Sc. Hons. candidate
[email protected] Maddie's B. Sc. Hons. project deals with modelling sediment and carbon fluxes in the discontinuous-permafrost floodplain of the Watson River, Yukon, Canada. |
Abigail Villard, B. Sc. Hons. candidate
[email protected] Abigail's B. Sc. Hons. project deals with the characterization of sediment dynamics in relation to discharge stage in the watershed of the Tanana River, Alaska, USA. |
Our campus
Our campus is situated within the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation.
Kelowna is located in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, and it is surrounded by hills and lakes with countless opportunities for hiking, skying, biking, paddling, and more.
